Aqara LED Strip T1 review: a home ambiance booster

Jun 14, 2024

Chinese smart home supplier Aqara recently unveiled its Smart LED Strip T1 with Matter support to global markets. Initially launched in China, a key feature of the LED Strip T1 is its ability to sync with music rhythms for dynamic lighting effects.

Having received a global unit from Aqara and used it for a week, I’ve discovered that it serves as an ideal enhancement to elevate the ambiance of living or entertainment spaces. Here’s our quick take:

Being a bridgeable device between Aqara and Matter, the setup process shouldn’t pose any concerns. The package encompasses three integral components: a power adapter accompanied by detachable plugs, a control panel, and an LED strip featuring diverse connectors that ensure effortless assembly.

The LED strip boasts a balanced combination of sturdiness and flexibility and is equipped with adhesive on the rear for easy application to nearly any surface. Though the bulb density appears low upon direct observation, it becomes less visible once installed.

The light strip’s primary functions include serving as supplementary lighting, infusing a burst of color into your living area, and elevating the immersive quality of video watching or gaming sessions.

When it comes to installation, two methods are recommended. One option is to install the strip in a nook or cranny, allowing the light’s glow to subtly illuminate the surroundings without casting a direct glare into viewers’ eyes. An instance of this could be the space between a bed’s headboard and the adjacent wall.

Alternatively, the strip can be affixed to a wall, potentially running alongside a table or positioned behind a TV or monitor. This positioning casts a delightful wash of color onto the wall while ensuring visual comfort.

Much like its competitors, the Aqara LED Strip T1 can be customized to fit specific needs, either through trimming unused segments or by adding extensions. Remarkably, it boasts an impressive feature that allows users to establish an illuminating range without necessitating any cutting of the strip. This eco-friendly feature minimizes waste and promotes reusability, which is particularly useful if you decide to relocate the strip any time later.

The product comes with a 3M sticker that sticks firmly without leaving any adhesive residue. I tested it by reinforcing my desk with more attachments and did not encounter any issues during the removal or reinstallation process.

Upon powering up, the strip is ready to pair with your smart home system. Simply open the Aqara app and pair it with your Zigbee gateway like any other Aqara device.

Notably, the device can function independently without having to connect to any ecosystem, especially if you lack a supported Aqara Zigbee gateway. The control panel offers essential commands, including a sound pick toggle, a power switch, and an illuminating presets switch.

When pairing is successful, the device automatically appears on the Aqara app and connected ecosystems via Aqara or Matter bridges.

The Aqara app provides a range of settings to personalize the light strip. One of the first things to notice are the illuminating patterns. The device can emit white spectrum light or colorful hue light using different LED sets within the strip, with the white spectrum light boasting a higher maximum brightness than the RGB.

The Aqara LED Strip T1 presents a myriad of dynamic light effects, affording users the flexibility to fine-tune these effects based on their color and motion preferences. Particularly noteworthy is the unit’s remarkable customization capabilities, enabling users to assign distinct colors to individual blocks of the strip, choosing which blocks to illuminate and which to dim. Additionally, for those equipped with an extended-length strip, the adaptable unit can be calibrated to suit the meters of their choice.

This LED strip possesses the captivating capability to respond to sound and offers rhythmic and dazzling light displays perfect for both entertainment and home ambiance. I discovered that this feature seamlessly complements rhythm-based game titles like Just Dance, elevating ordinary gameplay into a luminescent spectacle. The effect is truly immersive, transforming your living room into a miniature dance club.

However, for an optimal visual experience, I recommend introducing a secondary light source at a lower brightness level. This approach helps balance the potentially intense LED lights.

The LED strip looks exceptionally appealing when combined with IKEA’s perfboard, a pairing IKEA itself recommends for amplified aesthetics.

In sound pickup mode, there’s minimal lag; the LED strip aligns seamlessly with various rhythms. It even offers two sensitivity levels, although I did observe some challenges in capturing sounds from speakers positioned at a greater distance from the control panel’s built-in microphone.

After trialing the unit with a decibel detector, I determined that the threshold to activate the high sensitivity level is around 53 dB.

When considering the use and location of the strip, it’s important to consider a few factors. The control panel with a microphone is connected by a shorter cable to the light strip. Users will need to decide whether to conceal the control panel and cable, which may reduce the sound pickup’s sensitivity, or leave them exposed, potentially disrupting the room’s aesthetics.

Another issue is that Matter and other platforms, such as Apple Home, do not offer comprehensive support for most of their features.

Unlike other gadgets, it still needs more options to control, like a toggle of sound pick mode on third-party platforms. However, as Matter and these platforms continue to progress in their compatibility, it’s still feasible to have an improved experience using such gadgets across various platforms. It is worth paying attention if you heavily rely on external platforms for managing your smart gadgets.

Despite these minor reservations, I highly endorse this light strip, especially to those who have yet to own an LED strip. If you already have some at home but are interested in upgrading to a smarter iteration, then the Aqara LED Strip T1 certainly merits your consideration. Additionally, if you’re aiming to elevate your living environment through room decoration or supplementary lighting, this strip emergemerges as a compelling contender.
